Hawaii Edges Mavericks in Thriller, 77-73

Box Score HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Omaha men's basketball team dropped a thriller at Hawaii on Friday night, falling 77-73 at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Mavericks are now 10-5 (0-0 Summit League), while the Rainbow Warriors improve to 11-3 (0-0 Big West).

Senior center John Karhoff led the Mavericks with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting with a 3-of-3 effort at the free throw line. Karhoff added four rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Senior guard Justin Simmons joined Karhoff in double figures with 14 points, two boards, an assist and three steals. Junior forward Mike Rostampour narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and a game-leading 11 rebounds.

Hawaii was paced by 25 points from Isaac Fotu, who hit 8-of-11 shots from the floor and 10-of-12 from the free throw line and also pulled down eight rebounds. Christian Standhardinger tallied a double-double on 10 points and 10 boards, while Garrett Nevels added 12 points, and Keith Shamburger had 10.

Omaha and Hawaii were nearly even from the field with Omaha finishing at 39 percent (23-of-59) and Hawaii coming in at a 40 percent clip (25-of-63). The Mavericks finished at 28 percent (5-of-18) from 3-point range, while UH shot 13 percent (2-of-16). UNO was 82 percent (22-of-27) from the charity stripe, and Hawaii finished at 71 percent (25-of-35). The Rainbow Warriors won the battle of the boards, 44-34.

The first half saw seven ties and six lead changes between the two squads. The Mavericks' 5-of-9 shooting from long range compared to Hawaii's 1-of-7 was key to UNO's 36-32 lead at halftime.

UNO led most of the second half, taking its largest margin at 65-56 with 7:44 left. Hawaii chipped away and brought it back to a one-point game at 72-71 with a Standhardinger layup. With 0:53 remaining, Rostampour was whistled for a technical foul, and Shamburger made all three of his free throw attempts to give Hawaii the lead at 74-72. The Mavericks missed their next three field goal attempts, while Hawaii made three of its four foul shots in the closing seconds, spurring the Rainbow Warriors to the 77-73 win.

Omaha returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 11, opening Summit League play with a trip to Western Illinois.
