OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha men's soccer team fell to Cal State Fullerton, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at the UNO Soccer Field.
The Titans (2-5) scored early and late in the first half to take control. In the third minute, Garrett Losee headed home a free kick from the right side by Spencer Johnson to give CSUF a 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks (1-5) had their best chance of the half when
Vance Rookwood cut back on the left side and fired a low shot that was scooped up by CSUF goalie Robbie Hannon.
The Titans doubled their lead in the 42nd minute. Marc Fenelus chased a throw-in down the right sideline, worked his way through three Maverick defenders and played a ball on the ground across the six-yard box. Amara Soumah was waiting on the back post for the tap-in goal to make it 2-0.
Things almost got worse for the Mavericks when the Titans earned a penalty kick three minutes into the second half. However, Omaha goalie
Matt Grosey guessed correctly and made a big save. Grosey made two other saves on point-blank chances to keep the score 2-0.
The Mavs were unlucky not to get on the board in the in the 51st minute when
Xavier Gomez blasted a 30-yard shot off the crossbar. But the ball bounced down on the goal line and rolled away.
Jaime Cano made it 3-0 with 14:19 left on the Titans' second penalty kick attempt of the half, which was earned after a Maverick handball in the box.
Cal State Fullerton had a 13-12 shot advantage and a 9-3 edge in shots on goal.
The Mavs are back at home on Tuesday to host Kansas City at 4 p.m.
