RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The UNO men's soccer team fell to San Diego State 3-2 in the opening game of the Courtyard by Marriott Highlander Invitational on Friday night.
Things got off to an unfortunate start for UNO when San Diego State (2-2-1) scored 4:26 into the match. Jordan Ongaro intercepted a drop from a UNO defender to goalie
Matt Grosey and finished for the 1-0 lead.
But
Vance Rookwood equalized in the 26th minute.
Giovanni Giattino's shot attempt hit Rookwood, who collected the ball and finished from 11 yards out to tie the game 1-1.
The Aztecs regained the lead in the 32nd minute, as John Pegg scored from just outside the penalty box to make it 2-1. In the 60th minute, Casey Meuser headed home a throw in to extend the Aztecs' lead to 3-1.
Giattino scored with 10 seconds remaining for his first career goal off of an assist from
Craig Buettner. Buettner dribbled to the end line and cut it back and centered a pass to Giattino, who slotted it home.
SDSU outshot UNO 15-13 overall and 7-5 in shots on goal. Grosey made four saves.
The Mavs (2-3) wrap up play at the tournament on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. (CT) against host No. 25 UC Riverside.
