Giovanni Giattino scored two goals, and the UNO men's soccer team capped the 2012 season with a 2-0 shutout win at Oral Roberts.
The Mavs finished 5-10-1 overall and 3-3-1 in The Summit League. Their 10 points in conference play put them in a tie for fourth place with Fort Wayne in the final conference standings. The Mavs aren't eligible for the conference tournament until 2015. Oral Roberts finished 4-13 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
After a scoreless first half, Giattino netted the game-winner in the 56th minute. Chava Garcia took a shot that was saved by goalie Ryan Grashik, but Giattino collected the rebound and put it home for a 1-0 Omaha lead. Garcia picked up the assist.
In the final minute of the match, Grashik pushed forward to try and help the Golden Eagles tie the match, but
Mo Salama won a ball and played it to Giattino, who scored from near midfield into an empty net to seal the victory. Salama earned the assist for his first point of the season.
The goals were the third and fourth of the season for the freshman Giattino, who has spent most of the season sharing the ball with a team-high seven assists. He finished the season with a team-leading 15 points, which tied for fourth in The Summit League and led all freshmen. Garcia's assist gave him 11 points in his freshman season. Sophomore
Vance Rookwood finished with 12 points on a team-best five goals and two assists.
Omaha outshot Oral Roberts 18-12 overall and 10-6 in shots on goal.
Matt Grosey made six big saves to earn his third shutout of the season. The Mavs played effectively with a three-man back line for the second straight game, as Salama,
Nick Miller and
Felipe da Silva all played the full 90 minutes to contribute to the shutout.
Oakland won the regular-season Summit League title and earned the top seed in this week's Summit League Tournament, which the top four teams in the standings qualify for. Kansas City finished second, and Western Illinois and Fort Wayne claimed the third and fourth seeds, respectively.
