TULSA, Okla. - The Omaha men's soccer team got an early lead at No. 20 Tulsa but ended up falling 5-2 on Monday night.
The Mavericks (4-6-1, 2-0-1 Summit) gained a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when Chava Garcia blasted home a shot from 25 yards out into the upper right corner.
Logan Mendez earned the assist on Garcia's fourth goal of the season.
But the Golden Hurricane (8-4, 2-1 Conference USA) showed why they are ranked in the NSCAA Top 25 Poll, scoring two first-half goals to take the lead before halftime. Cristian Mata scored in the 33rd minute to tie the game, and Bryce Follensbee gave Tulsa the lead in the 38th minute.
Tulsa kept up the pressure in the second half, getting goals from Tony Rocha (63rd minute) and Omar Mata (65th minute) to stake a 4-1 lead. Omaha cut the lead to 4-2 when Mendez rebounded home a save after a
Devin Diego free kick. Mendez tallied three points on the night and has now scored six points in his last three games.
Tulsa's Jon Wright scored in the 88th minute to cap the scoring and make it 5-2. The Golden Hurricane outshot UNO 13-5 on frame.
Matt Grosey made eight saves.
The Mavericks return to Summit League play this weekend when they play at Fort Wayne on Saturday 6 p.m.
