SIUE Slips Past Mavericks 3-2

Final Stats

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIU Edwardsville broke a 2-2 tie in the 65th minute and was able to cling to a 3-2 win over the UNO men's soccer team Tuesday night.

The Mavs (3-5-1, 1-0-1) stepped out of conference play for the match against the Cougars (8-3), the second year in a row UNO has made the trip to the Missouri Valley Conference school.

SIUE took an early lead in the fourth minute when Peter Kelly scored his first of two goals in the game. Kelly took a pass from the left side and finished from six yards out.

But the Mavericks had a quick answer. Craig Buettner scored his first goal of the season to tie the match at 1-1 in the sixth minute. Buettner finished from 15 yards out in the center of the box. Giovanni Giattino picked up his Summit League-leading seventh assist on the play and extended his point streak to three games.

Kelly tallied his second goal of the game and fifth of the season at 33:30 to reclaim a 2-1 lead for the Cougars.

Less than four minutes later, UNO earned a penalty kick at 36:55 after an SIUE foul. Logan Mendez drilled home the PK for his first goal of the season, evening the score at 2-2.

After four goals in the first half, SIUE scored the only goal in the second half, and that turned out to be the game-winner. Brett Lane headed home a corner kick at 64:26 for the 3-2 lead.

SIUE outshot UNO 9-5 overall and 6-4 on goal. Matt Grosey made three saves.

Omaha is back at home in conference play this weekend when it hosts Eastern Illinois on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the UNO Soccer Field. The Mavs are 3-0 at home this year with a 9-2 goal difference.
