FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The UNO men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 road defeat at Fort Wayne on Saturday night.
The loss puts the Mavericks at 4-7-1 overall and 2-1-1 in Summit League play. The Mavs remain in third place in The Summit League standings with seven points, two points behind second-place Kansas City. IPFW improved to 1-12-1 overall and 1-2-1 in conference action, good for four points and fifth place in the conference standings.
Omaha dominated play early on, recording the first six shots of the match. But IPFW scored against the run of play to flip the momentum. IPFW earned a corner kick in the 31st minute, and after a shot by Jackson Tooke was blocked by a Maverick defender, Nate Shipman jumped on the rebound and scored for a 1-0 lead on his first goal of the season. That was the first time the Mastodons had threatened the Maverick net.
From there on, IPFW played stout defense to maintain the shutout over the Mavs, who had scored in five straight games and ranked 20th nationally entering the game with 2.0 goals scored per game.
The Mavs' lone shot on goal in the second half came from
Giovanni Giattino in the 74th minute, but it was saved by IPFW goalie Brandon Cloutier. Omaha had a 13-11 edge in shots, while the Mastodons put four on frame to the Mavs' three.
UNO will travel to Milwaukee to face the Panthers on Tuesday at 3 p.m. That marks the final non-conference game of the season for the Mavs.
