SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara Broncos scored three goals in a span of 2:17 early in the first half to overpower the UNO men's soccer team on Friday night, 4-0.
The game was delayed for 90 minutes at halftime because of lightning.
Santa Clara (2-1-1) opened the scoring 15:43 into the game. The Broncos forced a turnover in the center of the Mavericks' half, then Connor Mitchell got free on the right side and played a centering pass to Glenn Vass, who knocked it home from 12 yards out.
Erik Hurtado added the second goal from the top of the 18-yard box, also assisted by Mitchell, just 1:39 later. And 38 seconds after that, Carlos Montes scored off a cross from Hurtado to make it 3-0 just 18 minutes into the match.
After the delay, in the 59th minute, Eric Masch extended the lead to 4-0 on a rip into the upper left corner from just outside the box.
UNO (1-3) had a good early scoring chance in the 10th minute, but
Isaac Beber's shot from seven yards out was turned away by Kevin Klasila.
The Mavericks will stay in California over the weekend to face San Jose State on Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT).
