OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO Maverick men's soccer team broke its seven-game scoreless streak, but Fort Hays State beat the Mavericks, 3-1, on Friday at the UNO Soccer Field in UNO's final home game of the season.
The Mavericks (1-8-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 5:41 into the game, thanks to the first home goal in program history.
Ameer Pinto dribbled down the center of the field and dished the ball off to
Vance Rookwood, who carried the ball on to his left foot to set up a 22-yard strike that found the upper left side of the net.
The goal ended the Mavs' seven-game scoring drought and gave UNO its first lead since its season-opening win at UMKC.
But Fort Hays State (8-2-1), also a first-year program, leveled the score at 1-1 at the 13:06 mark. Travis Patzner knocked home a loose ball in the center of the box after a corner kick scramble.
UNO momentarily thought it had regained the lead later in the first half.
Isaac Beber played a ball in from the left wing, and
Craig Buettner rose up and headed it into the net past Tiger goalie Ryan Pakieser, but Buettner was ruled offsides.
Rookwood narrowly missed a scoring opportunity in the final seconds of the first half when his blast from the left side of the box went just right of the far post.
In the 54th minute, Fort Hays State's leading scorer Ricardo Yeverino broke the deadlock with his team-high 11th goal of the season. Diego Cabral dribbled down the center of the field and played the ball to Yeverino on the right side. Yeverino dribbled down the right side of the box and beat UNO goalie
Josh Christensen to the far post to make it 2-1.
The Tigers added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute. Cabral again carried the ball through the center of the field and played a ball wide to the left to Tomas Mares. Mares dribbled down the left side of the box and ripped a shot high to the near post to make it 3-1.
Fort Hays State finished with a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. Christensen finished with three saves for the Mavericks in a game that featured 30 mph winds.
The Mavs immediately hit the road again for a Sunday, Oct. 16 match at Illinois-Chicago at 7 p.m. That match begins the final four-game road stretch to end the season.
