UNO Football Hires Onatolu

OMAHA, Neb. – University of Nebraska at Omaha head football coach Pat Behrns announced today the hiring of former UNO standout Taiwo Onatolu as the team's new linebackers coach.  Onatolu, a three-year graduate assistant with the team, replaces Chris Simpson who left the team for a position with Grand Valley State University.

“Taiwo was a natural fit for this position,” said Behrns.  “As a graduate assistant and former player here, he knows our defense inside and out.  With his experience working with our players, I think he will make a smooth transition into the role of linebackers coach.”

Onatolu is a former All-American linebacker for UNO, earning the honor in 2004.  He was a three-time North Central Conference first team selection and the league's most valuable linebacker in 2004.  He earned second- and third-team All-American honors as a senior in 2005.  He finished his four-year playing career second in career tackles at UNO, and he helped lead the Mavericks to two NCC titles.

Onatolu graduated from Papillion-LaVista High School before coming to UNO.  He earned his bachelor's degree in business administration in 2006.

As a graduate assistant for the last three seasons at UNO, Onatolu coached All-American safety Randy Kush in 2007 as he became the school's all-time leader in interceptions.

The Mavericks begin spring practice on Tuesday, March 23 at 4:30 p.m. at Al Caniglia Field on the UNO campus.  Members of the media are invited to attend.  Spring practice culminates with the annual Spring Game presented by Cox Communications on Saturday, April 17 at 7 p.m. at Caniglia Field.
