Third-Generation Thompson Signs with UNO

Drew Thompson will follow his grandfather, father and uncle as he continues his basketball career. The Millard West High School senior this week signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Maverick head coach Derrin Hansen announced.

Thompson, a 5-9, 150-pound point guard, averaged 10 points and 5.5 assists per game and was an all-state honorable mention performer at Millard West under coach Rick Hook. He set a school record with 12 assists in a game and stands No. 2 in career assists and assists in a season and No. 3 in career steals.

Drew's father, Dean Thompson Jr., is UNO's all-time scoring leader with 1,816 points during his 1980-84 career. His uncle, Tom Thompson, scored 1,058 points during a 1984-88 career and is among the school's top 25 career scorers. His grandfather, Dean Thompson Sr., scored 883 points while playing from 1953-57.

"There is no family that is more identified with UNO basketball," Hansen said. "We know that Drew is a quality athlete and a quality person, and I'm looking forward to having him on the team and watching him progress.

Drew Thompson led his team with 121 assists, in field goal percentage (59.0) and three-point shooting (35.0 percent) as well as minutes played and was named the team's most outstanding player. Millard West, 14-8, finished ranked No. 9 in the Class A top 10.
