On June 21, 2011, Mike Saniuk was named the head coach of the UNO women's tennis team, adding on to his duties as head coach of the men's team, which he took on in June of 2010.
"I am really excited to be given the chance to coach both the men's and women's programs at UNO," Saniuk said. "To be honest, it is a dream come true. With the support of the Omaha tennis community and at UNO, I know that our program has the chance to become something really special in the state. UNO's best tennis is in the near future."
In his first year as the head men's tennis coach at UNO in 2010-11, Saniuk led the Mavericks to a 9-9 overall record, a 2-2 MIAA conference mark and a semifinal appearance at the conference tournament in their Division II days.
In 2011-12, the Mavs posted a 5-10 record in their first year of their Division I transition, which saw UNO compete as an independent for one year. The Mavericks notched their first Division I win with a 4-3 triumph at Western Illinois on April 16, 2012.
In 2012-13, the Mavs competed in The Summit League for the first time, finishing 0-5 in conference play with a 5-16 overall record against nearly an entire Division I schedule for the first time. The Mavs picked up two more wins against Division I foes in Oral Roberts and Chicago State as part of their building process.
In 2013-14, the Mavericks hosted three teams in the first annual National Invitational Tennis Tournament at Koch Tennis Center, and the team also made a spring break trip to Florida. UNO finished the season 6-18 overall, the most wins in the Division I era, and went 1-4 in the Summit League.
Saniuk was named head coach of the UNO men's tennis team in June of 2010 after two seasons as the assistant coach for both the Maverick men's and women's tennis programs.
