The University of Nebraska at Omaha each November hosts the nation’s largest collegiate wrestling meet. The Ryan Kaufman-Glen Brand Open attracts 500-700 wrestlers from 35 teams in 12 states to the Sapp Fieldhouse. In 2007, 600 wrestlers competed in over 1,400 matches during the 9 a.m. - 11 p.m. non-scored meet.
The meet, originally named the UNO Open, was renamed after the late Ryan Kaufman, a Maverick national champion and a member of the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Kaufman, an Omaha fireman, was killed in a traffic accident in early 1991. However his legacy lives on, not just with this tournament, but also in the North Central Conference, which has named its award to the outstanding wrestler in the NCC meet after him.
Glen Brand, an Omaha resident and former Olympic champion, has given the financial support to the tournament and also sponsors the Glen Brand Open, held at UNO each January.

Bonnie Denny and Sandy Higdon were honored in a ceremony at the Kaufman-Brand Open Nov. 21, 2009. The two were escorted to the center of the mats by the UNO wrestling team and coaches prior to the start of the tournament and the following words were words were given by Maverick head coach Mike Denney.
“Bonnie and Sandy are the first women to be inducted into the Kaufman-Brand Hall of Fame in its 15-year history. They represent all the women who work tirelessly without recognition behind the scenes supporting and encouraging husbands, spouses, sons, grandsons, relatives, teams, friends and the sport of wrestling. They work at the gate, in the concession stand, scoring and timing matches, bracketing, photography, recording matches, providing food for the wrestlers, serving as second mothers and counselors.
Bonnie has worked the Kaufman-Brand Open since we started the tournament 30 years ago. She has worked the gate, the concessions stand for the Kaufman-Brand and all of our tournaments. She does all the food for our team during the season. She is a second mother and the number one ambassador for our team and has been for over 40 years. She also raised three children who she had working at all of our events. Bonnie is a former teacher in the Omaha Public Schools system and at Boys Town.
Sandy helps with entries, brackets, photography and is the number one counselor for our team. She has worked the Kaufman-Brand Open and all of our other tournaments for the last 10 years. She is a graduate of UNO and a 10-time All-American in track and field. She spent nine years in the athletic department as the compliance director and academic coordinator and she has been a loyal and dedicated student-athlete and employee for the last 14 years.
“It is with an attitude of gratitude that we honor them and all the women who like them are the wind beneath so many wings,” said Mike Denney. “It is a pleasure and honor to induct Bonnie Denney and Sandy Higdon into the 2009 Kaufman-Brand Hall of Fame.”
They recieved a standing ovation from a packed Sapp Fieldhouse. |
