FARGO, N.D. -- A third-inning scoring surge helped the Omaha baseball team cruise to a 13-2 win and even the series at North Dakota State Saturday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field.
Omaha improves to 14-24 on the season with a 9-8 league record, while the Bison drop to 16-19 overall and 8-10 in Summit League play.
Cole Thibodeau went a perfect 4-for-4, while
Braden Rogers went 3-for-5 with three RBI, and
Adam Caniglia drove in two more runs and went 2-for-4. Overall the Mavericks totaled 14 hits and committed no errors, while the Bison recorded seven hits and three errors.
Ben Palensky put the Mavericks on the board first after launching a solo shot down the left field line in the top of the second.
From there, it was all Omaha, as the top of the third saw four runs. Both Thibodeau and
Hunter Hughes got on base, and a
Thomas DeBonville single brought home a run. Thibodeau eventually scored from third off a groundout to make it 3-0. Cue up Caniglia, who doubled and brought home DeBonville and Rogers to give the Mavericks a 5-0 lead through the middle of the third.
A Bison homer to left center brought two runs in and cut the lead to three, but Omaha did not waiver and plated four more runs in the top of the sixth. After a Thibodeau single scored
Jack Kalina, the Mavericks were able to load the bases. Thibodeau eventually scored on a wild pitch, followed by Caniglia being hit by a pitch that brought home
Tyler Daugherty. Finally, an NDSU passed ball resulted in
Keil Krumwiede coming across for a 9-2 game.
In the final inning, the Mavericks tacked on another quartet of runs when a Daugherty sacrifice fly brought in Thibodeau, followed by a double from Rogers that helped Krumwiede and DeBonville score. Rogers eventually scored off a Bison error to cap off the 11-run win.
On the mound,
Spencer Koelewyn (3-4) earned the win, issuing four strikeouts and two walks through 5.0 innings pitched, while
Cal Hehnke earned his team-leading fifth save of the season with five strikeouts, just one walk and two hits through 4.0 shutout innings. The Bison's Blake Stockert fell to 4-2 on the mound with the loss, surrendering five runs (two earned) on five hits with three walks.
