Late Surge Pushes Mavericks Past Oral Roberts, 8-2

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha baseball team rattled off its fifth straight win Saturday afternoon, dropping Oral Roberts 8-2 at Seymour Smith Park. The Mavericks are now 9-12 (5-0 Summit League), while the Golden Eagles fall to 12-9 (3-2).

Spencer Koelewyn (2-1) earned his second straight win on the mound, tossing 6.0 innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Tanner Rogen (2-2) was tagged with the loss, surrendering two runs in the sixth. Cal Hehnke earned his first career save with 3.0 innings of one-hit, shutout ball with a walk and three strikeouts.

Cole Thibodeau was 4-for-5 with his seventh stolen base of the year and scored three runs. Grant Suponchick went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI.

Omaha struck for a run in the first inning, as Thibodeau led off with a double down the right field line, advanced on a Suponchick sacrifice bunt and scored on Keil Krumwiede's RBI groundout for a 1-0 lead.

Oral Roberts promptly tied it in the second when Nick Rotola scored on Jack Rosenberg's RBI double to right. The Golden Eagles took the lead in the third when Nick Roark scored on a Maverick fielding error for a 2-1 tally.

But the Mavericks came up big in the sixth, plating four runs on two hits with two errors to erase the deficit. Tyler Daugherty led off with a walk and Ben Palensky was hit by a pitch to put a pair on, prompting an ORU pitching change. A sacrifice bunt by Adam Caniglia moved both in scoring position, and Daugherty came in on an RBI groundout by Max Gamm to lock the game at 2-2. Palensky then scored in the go-ahead run on a wild pitch to make it 3-2.

Thibodeau continued with an infield single and stole second, and two ORU errors allowed him to score. Suponchick then pushed an RBI single through the left side to bring home Thomas DeBonville, putting Omaha in the driver's seat at 5-2.

The Mavericks added to their lead in the eighth with three runs on a trio of hits. Thibodeau started it off with a one-out infield single, and he was driven in on an RBI double to deep center by DeBonville. Suponchick followed with another RBI double, making it 7-2. After a Krumwiede walk and a wild pitch that moved Suponchick to third, Braden Rogers reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed Suponchick to score for a commanding 8-2 advantage.

Omaha and Oral Roberts finish their weekend series on Sunday, March 25, with first pitch at Noon at Seymour Smith Park. Live stats will be available on OMavs.com.
