Mavericks Rally for 6-5 Comeback Win Over Ohio

EMERSON, Ga. -- The Omaha baseball team rallied for a comeback win over Ohio Friday afternoon, defeating the Bobcats 6-5 at Perfect Game Park at LakePoint. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 3-5 on the season, while Ohio dropped to 4-5.

Jake Pennington (2-1) earned the win in relief, throwing 6.0 shutout innings with six hits, no walks and two strikeouts. The loss went to Ohio reliever Cory Blessing (1-1), who gave up two runs on four hits over 2.0 innings. Tommy Steier tallied his first career save with a scoreless ninth inning.

A 3-for-5 day from Hunter Hughes led the Mavericks, and the freshman also scored twice. Max Gamm (2-for-4, one run, one RBI) had another multi-hit effort, as did Keil Krumwiede (2-for-4, one run). Thomas DeBonville drove in a pair of runs for the day.

Omaha found itself in an early 5-0 hole, as the Bobcats scored a run in the first and four more in the second. The scoring ended there, however, as Pennington held Ohio to six hits over the next six innings and the Mavericks plated six unanswered runs.

Omaha managed to get on the board in the fourth. With two outs, Hughes and Krumwiede both singled to right, and Ben Palensky walked to load the bases. Daugherty then drew another free pass to bring in Hughes at 5-1. The Mavericks added another run in the fifth when DeBonville reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed Thibodeau to score after leading off the inning with a single to center.

Omaha made it a one-run ballgame in the sixth, pushing across two runs with a pair of hits. Krumwiede led off with a walk, advanced on a Palensky sacrifice bunt and scored on Parker Smejkal's pinch-hit RBI triple to center. Two batters later, Gamm singled to third to plate Smejkal, trimming it to 5-4.

The seventh inning put the game in a 5-5 lock after Hughes singled to center, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Palensky's RBI double to left.

Omaha capped the comeback in the eighth with three straight two-out singles. Gamm first singled to center, then advanced to third on a Rogers base hit to the same spot and finally scored on DeBonville's RBI single to right, which put the Mavericks ahead, 6-5. Pennington retired the Bobcats in order in the bottom half of the frame, and Steier finished it off with a scoreless ninth to seal the win.

Omaha and Ohio resume play on Saturday, March 3 with a doubleheader at Noon CT.
