Mavs Drop Vikings 26-6 in Final Dual of the Season

OMAHA, Neb. - The top-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team won its eighth-straight dual Wednesday night with a 26-6 win over No. 5 Augustana in front of 1,035 fans at Sapp Fieldhouse on senior night. The Mavericks finish their dual season with a 13-1 record while dropping the Vikings to 11-6. UNO went 8-2 on the night, winning the first five matches of the dual and scoring bonus points in two matches.
Maverick redshirt freshman Terrell McKinney set the tone for the dual with an opening 10-3 decision over Augustana junior Al Meger at 125 pounds. McKinney scored points on three takedowns and a nearfall.
Senior Cody Garcia won his last dual match as a Maverick with a 6-2 decision over eight-ranked Laramie Shaffer at 133. The second-ranked Garcia is 42-0 with 14 dual victories on the year. His 42 wins are tops in all of collegiate wrestling.
Third-ranked Mario Morgan squared off with seventh-ranked Jay Sherer at 141 pounds. Morgan earned the victory in a hard-fought match, scoring a takedown in the first period and a nearfall to open the second period. Riding time gave Morgan the 5-3 decision, and his 23rd-straight win of the year. He is 34-3 on the year with a perfect 14-0 dual record.
At 149, third-ranked Esai Dominguez met fifth-ranked Nate Herda. Dominguez earned the Mavs their first bonus points of the night earning a 12-4 major decision to win his seventh-straight dual match of the season since returning from an injury.
Redshirt freshman and fifth-ranked George Ivanov came away with the upset of the night at 157. He handed Augustana's top-ranked Marcus Edgington his fourth loss of the year. Ivanov scored a takedown and a nearfall with seven seconds left in the second period to go up 6-2. The Council Bluffs, Iowa native added two more takedowns in the third period to earn the 10-5 decision.
The Vikings got their first win of the evening at 165 pounds with Gavin Nelson beating Nathan Sigman, 5-2. Aaron Denson battled eight-ranked Carl Serck at 174 pounds. The fifth-ranked Denson won his sixth-straight dual match, and earned UNO team bonus points with an 11-2 major decision victory.
At 184, Austin Boehm collected the win over Nick Henning by a 6-1 decision. Top-ranked UNO senior Jacob Marrs lost a heartbreaker to third-ranked Ty Copsey in the 197-pound showdown. Marrs tied the match at 2-2 after accumulating more than a minute and a half of riding time, but it was Copsey who scored a takedown to earn the 4-2 sudden victory decision win.
Second-ranked Elijah Madison ended the night with a 1-0 decision over Lance Peters.
UNO's 13-1 dual record marks the second-consecutive season that the team reached 13 dual wins. The Mavs finished the 2008-09 season with a perfect 13-0 mark.
The Mavericks will have ten days to prepare for the 2010 Midwest Super Regionals in Warrensburg, Mo., on Sunday, Feb. 28. Wrestling is slated for a 12 p.m. start at the UCM Multipurpose Building.
