Mavs Topple Eighth-Ranked Huskies, 34-9

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The top-ranked Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team (6-1) rebounded from its loss last night to Augsburg with a dominating 34-9 victory over the eighth-ranked St. Cloud State Huskies (9-6) Saturday afternoon at Halenbeck Hall.
It’s the second time this season that UNO has defeated SCSU, with the two last meeting on Jan. 9 at the NWCA National Duals. The win marks the 12th-straight dual win for the Mavericks against the Huskies.
UNO won eight of 10 matches in the dual, including seven in a row.
Wrestling started at 197 with top-ranked Jacob Marrs meeting sixth-ranked Lucas Munkelwitz. Marrs got out to a quick 7-0 lead and held on for a 9-0 major decision. It’s the second time this month that Marrs has defeated Munkelwitz by major decision. On Jan. 9 at the NWCA National Duals, Marrs was victorious by a score of 12-2 over Munkelwitz.
At 285, second-ranked Elijah Madison and sixth-ranked Jacob Kahnke squared off. The two needed extra time to decide a winner and it was Kahnke who was awarded a point for riding time to earn the 4-3 win over Madison.
The dual switched to the smaller weights with second-ranked Terrell McKinney getting the win over Trent Herold at 125, 8-4. It’s McKinney’s 21st win of the season. At 133, Cody Garcia won his 35th-straight match this season by beating Shane McQuade, 14-5. Third-ranked Mario Morgan collected a technical fall over Chad Schultz 18-3 in the 141-pound match. It was Morgan’s second win by tech. fall this season.
Tait Weatherbee had a 7-4 advantage with 23 seconds left in the third period when he pinned Jacob Horn. It was the 15th win of the year for Weatherbee.
At 157, second-ranked George Ivanov battled eighth-ranked John Sundgren in a rematch from the national duals Jan. 9. Again, it was Ivanonv getting the win, this time by a 6-4 decision. The win was Ivanov’s 25th of the season.
Ryan Pankoke won at 165 over Adam Minette, 8-4. Brett Rosedale collected the win at 174 via forfeit. At 184, No. 6 Austin Boehm met No. 5 Derek Skala and it was Skala who came away with a fall with 25 seconds left in the match.
The Mavericks will be on the road again for a pair of duals and an open tournament next weekend. On Friday, Jan. 29, UNO will head to Edmond, Okla., to battle Central Oklahoma at 7 p.m. Saturday night, the Mavs will square off will intrastate rival Nebraska-Kearney. The dual is slated for 7 p.m. at the Heath and Sports Center in Kearney, Neb. UNO will also send wrestlers to the Grand View Open in Des Moines, Iowa on Jan. 30.
