Bob Herold begins his 11th season as the head coach of the Mavericks. Herold has compiled a 342-204 record at UNO.

He became the third head coach in the 59-year history of UNO baseball in June 1999, when he replaced the retiring Bob Gates.

Herold guided the Mavericks to their first-ever NCAA II College World Series appearance in 2007, as UNO peaked at the end of the season, defeating the top three teams in the NCAA II Central Region to claim the regional title with a perfect 4-0 record in the tournament.

Herold has led the Mavericks to five consecutive NCAA II Tournament appearances and six overall.

In 2002, Herold earned NCC Coach of the Year honors, guiding the Mavericks to their first NCAA II Regional since 1981, posting a 33-17 record.

Herold also earned NCC Coach of the Year honors in 2005 and 2008 when UNO claimed the NCC Tournament and regular season titles both seasons.

Herold guided UNO to a school-record 45 victories in 2006 and again in 2008 as the Mavericks advanced to the NCAA II Regionals both years.    

Herold, a native Omahan, is no stranger to Nebraska-Omaha. He was a 1971 NAIA All-American during his playing days under Coach Virgil Yelkin and served as an assistant coach for the Mavericks under both Yelkin and Gates, from 1975-78. He earned both his bachelor of general studies (1972) and his master of science (1976) degrees from UNO.

Herold played seven professional seasons in the Kansas City Royals organization, the Mexican Leagues and in Columbia, South America. In addition to his UNO coaching experience, he also served as an assistant coach at the University of Louisville in 1974 and at Creighton University from 1985-87.

Herold also spent time in the Kansas City Royals organization. He managed eight seasons in the Royals’ farm system and led Royals affiliates to league championships. In 1999 he was the the hitting coach for the Omaha Golden Spikes, the Royals’ Class AAA Pacific Coast League affiliate.
 
Herold and his wife Sondra have three children, daughters Haley, Kiley and son Riley.
